ADA Training for Content Updaters
Although most of accessibility is handled with HTML by our UI designers and graphic update teams, there are many items our content updaters are required to update accessibly. These items include:
Accessible Links
Adding Links
Follow the instructions provided in content training.
It is important to provide links that are distinguishable. The videos below explain how to accomplish this and how to check for non-distinguishable link errors. You can also reference the Link Purpose document as a quick reference.
Checking for Link Errors
Skip Links
We need to provide a skip link option any time we use a long list of links. Our standard is to provide a skip link before any list of links including more than 10 links.
Using your keyboard, tab through a site. As you tab through a website, focus is brought to each active link. You will notice that as you get to each group of links, there is a skip link list option. This will allow you to skip past the links in each group. As you continue to tab, focus is brought to the next group of links.
We will also provide a skip link before a social media feed and quick links. We add a skip link for quick links during development. However, if you find the need to add the quick links module, please keep this in mind so you are sure we add a link before the new module.
Our graphic updaters will add the skip links when needed. Please be sure to let them know anytime you add a list of links consisting of more than 10 links. If you are not sure if something requires a skip link, be sure to ask your team manager.
Providing Content for Graphics
Our clients will often provide flyers they would like us to link to a news article. If the flyer is provided as a PDF, you do not need to add anything in addition to what you would normally include in the article. It is the client’s responsibility to provide an accessible PDF documents. You do not need to let them know it is their responsibility since we already tell them in the portal they use to submit the request.
Note: If the client is also a document remediation client, follow the steps provided in the content training prior to posting the document.
If the flyer is provide as a graphic (.jpg, .png), we need to include the content of the flyer in the news article. Graphics are only accessible if they include alternative text. Since we are limited to about 120 characters for alternative text, we need to provide the information in the news article text to be sure everyone has access to all of the content presented. With the information provided in the article, we can now link to the graphic image.
Tabular Data (Tables)
Our graphic updaters will add data tables. It is important to note that just because something looks like a table does not mean it needs to be a table. A true data table includes headers.
If you are not sure as to whether or not you need to add content as a table, be sure to ask your team manager.
